Why "The Glider"?

Picture
Our Club Bulletin is called "The Glider"

The sport of SOARING has been practiced in this area for generations.
The Schweizer Corporation has manufactured Sailplanes in nearby Big Flats NY, since the early 1900's.

The National Soaring Museum is located on Harris Hill less than 3 Miles from the Village of Elmira Heights.

On any pleasant Summer day it is common to see gliders soaring high overhead,
gracefully and silently riding the air currents rising up the slopes of Harris Hill.

August 26th 2010

President LINDA called the meeting to order, following the Pledge,
a patriotic Song and the blessing,
she introduced our 2010-2011 Rotary Exchange Student Deigo Gonzalez
He comes from a small town just South of Guadalajara Mexico.
Deigo's temporary "brother" Mitchell Ripley was here with him.
We also enjoyed the company of
our Speaker, Joyce Wasserman,
Brittany Covington,
who was herself an exchange student,
and Line Erhardtsen, a 16 year old Exchange Student
from Denmark,
who is staying with her.

CARDBOARD BOAT REGATTA is a BIG SUCCESS
Westervelts donate winnings to ROTARY..!!!

Picture
A Boisterous group of Rotarians and friends watched as the SIX contenders lined up on the shore of Waneta Lake for Inspection.  Wagers were made on the prettiest, fastest, and quickest to sink.
The competition began with enthusiasm and high hopes, but as the oarsman quickly tired, it became apparent that some of the Boats were not quite seaworthy.
KUDOS To the Fellowship Committee and especially to AJ and Janel for their hard work and Hospitality.

OUR PROGRAM THIS WEEK
  Service Experience in India
Physical Therapist, Joyce Wasserman, gave us a fine presentation with slides of her trip to INDIA.
She wore a lovely decorated Sari that she received as a gift and remarked that the Culture in India has a long tradition of generosity and hospitality.  Anyone who comes to your door is treated as a blessing, whether a stranger, a beggar or an invited guest.
The population of India is over 1 BILLION people and
Joyce worked with Physicians and other Volunteers to assist children with disabilities.  Her first placement was at a school for disabled children where she found a dedicated and humane staff but few resources to work with.
Joyce
noted that many areas have no facilities to assist disabled people and added that even in urban areas, utilities are often sporadic and unreliable.
Her second placement was in one of India's top Hospitals, where the most modern and current medical techniques are practiced.  People from all over the world come there for superb and affordable Joint replacement surgery.

One of her comments was that the people in India are being taught to be CONSUMERS, with the hope that demand for goods and services will stimulate greater supply.
Our thank's to Joyce for her educational program

LESSONS IN CAPITALISM

Growing up as a kid, I learned all about capitalism
through the board game Monopoly.
What better way to teach a young mind the way our economy functions.

I loved this game and still do.
Only now, as an adult I have some questions that remain unanswered.

For instance, after accumulating all this money and acquiring all this real estate.
why am I still driving around in a thimble?

Senior Health Care Facility opens in Twin-Tiers

Picture
President Barack Obama recently signed the much debated UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE BILL, and it is already beginning to affect local medical facilities.

Local Seniors will now have access to "State of the art" diagnoses and treatment for a wide variety conditions that affect the elderly.

The Elmira Heights Rotary Club Board of Directors is looking into chartering a bus to take local citizens and members of the club to the new facility for free screening.

President Linda announced that a sign-up sheet will be circulated at meetings for next few weeks to see if members have enough interest.  (Sorry Gang LOL)
